Pie Meeting Saturday 4th January 2014

World Events

Tim has been in situ at the Old Bridge Inn for 30 years today (to some it seems longer!)

Worst storms hit the coast of UK for over 20 years – Wales and the South Coast most badly affected.

Michael Schumacher in coma after hitting a boulder whilst skiing off-piste, only surviving due to wearing a helmet.

City of London fireworks were multi-sensory – they could be smelt and ‘tasted’!

CERN are upgrading the Large Hadron Collider.

Sport

England on track for a whitewash in Australia. 

Man Utd still in the doldrums, losing 1-0 to Spurs.

Leeds are knocked out FA Cup by Rochdale, 2-0.

Pies

Tim   (obviously on crack) Good looking pie, crisp, crunchy pastry, good amount of tasty jelly, well filled with spicy peppery meat, a winning pie! Score   9.5/10

Netty   Lovely looking pastry, firm slightly overly fine mince to the meat, good amount of pepper with a nice after-burn. Lovely jelly but slightly soggy bottom.

Score   7.5/10

Bruce   Good-looking pie, fresh, crispy pastry; lots of tasty jelly, coarse, well-seasoned meat, well filled a belter of a pie.

Score   8.5/10

Mark   That pie is what a pie should be. Or it was. I’ve eaten it now. I have nothing more to add.

Score   9.5/10

Howard   Good pie, the only slightly criticism was that I found the pastry a little too dry. Other than that, it’s all been said.

Mark   Crispy pastry, lovely nutty pastry. Lots of spice. Small amount of jelly.

Score   8.5/10

Tim   Pastry not cooked through. Meat was coarse and well seasoned.

Peter   Lovely crisp nutty pastry, well filled with tasty meat. A cracker of a pie.

Man City score over 100 Premiership goals this season. Former Pie Club member Bob (desceased) would be proud but Arsenal still top of the league.

Australian Open played in hottest weather ever.

Tim   Pie 1 Looked fresher than pie 2. Bit overcooked. No jelly under seasoned meat.

Pie 2 More pastry than meat. Needed more flavour. No Jelly.

Mark   Pie 1 Nice looking pie, overcooked pastry. Meat OK not much jelly.

Score   4.0/10

Pie 2 Dull looking tapered towards the top. Very thick pastry, little bit of  flavoursome meat. Not much jelly.

Howard   Pie 1 Burnt within an inch of its life. Rock hard, meat lacked taste and grisly.

Score   3.0/10

Pie 2 Just when you thought it could not get worse it did.

Score   1.0/10

Will   Pie 1 Dry lacked jelly, meat fatty full of grisle Unfinishable.

Score   2.0/10

Pie 2 Thick bland pastry, meat had flavour no pepper.

Score   4.0/10

Kevin   Pie 1 Hand raised pie, burnt pastry, short lardy. Some meat but could not differentiate between meat and pastry, could not finish. Poor.

Score   1.0/10

Pie 2 Old fashioned shape, soggy pastry not fresh. Nice amount of jelly. Little bit of afterburn.

Score   5.0/10

Peter   Pie 1 Attractive pastry case with crimped sides at the top. Very well filled, too thick short pastry, tasty meat.

Score   7.0/10

Pie 2 Looked good with the hand raised case. Not fresh, little jelly, quite bland.

Pies

Mark   Archetypal pork pie! Crispy, nutty pastry. Well shaped, well cooked. Fresh as a daisy. Lovely jelly. Coarse, tasty meat with lots of spice & afterburn. Knocked half off 'cos you can't have perfection. 

Score   9.5/10

Tim   Good looking pie, well glazed and evenly cooked. Well seasoned meat & jelly. Pastry just not as crunchy as I'd have liked. Bloody good pie. 

Score   8.5/10

Howard   Good sized, well glazed pie. Majority of pastry good & crunchy but bit soggy on bottom. Spicy, coarse, flavoursome meat. Plenty of tasty jelly.
